EdgeVis TVI vs H.264: evaluating low-bandwidth live video

Comparing EdgeVis TVI with H.264 streaming

This page brings together the Digital Barriers comparison video and guidance for evaluating live video on constrained networks. The video is a product demonstration; a deployment decision should also consider the test configuration and operational requirements.

What should a useful bandwidth comparison measure?

  • Equivalent input: use the same camera footage, scene duration, motion and lighting for both approaches.
  • Video settings: record source and transmitted resolution, frame rate, encoder version and quality settings.
  • Network conditions: record available uplink bandwidth, latency, jitter, packet loss and any simulated outages.
  • Operational usefulness: assess whether operators can see the detail needed for the task, alongside measured latency, interruptions and recovery.
  • Data use: measure total transmitted data over the same period, including overhead, and state the comparison baseline.

How are bandwidth savings calculated?

For an equivalent test period, bandwidth saving (%) = 100 × (baseline transmitted data − EdgeVis transmitted data) ÷ baseline transmitted data. The baseline must be greater than zero. Report the baseline settings and output quality alongside the percentage; savings alone do not describe the usefulness of the transmitted video.
